Blacklist victims share £5.6m after working lives destroyed

Construction workers have been awarded up to £200,000 in compensation for having their working lives destroyed after being blacklisted.

In what is believed to be the first major payout, a total of seventy-one former bricklayers and carpenters have received payment settlements worth £5.6m from major construction companies.

It was revealed that payments averaged £80,000 each, however some were as high as £200,000, to compensate workers for years they were denied employment after they were secretly blacklisted.

Many people were denied work on construction sites after they raised health and safety issues, or were branded “troublemakers”.

Consulting Association, which closed down in 2009 after the scandal was uncovered, kept a list of workers names labeling some as “violent” or “strike leaders”.

UCATT construction union, that pursued legal action for compensation have stated that the deal was the first significant milestone for workers affected by the blacklisting.

The union is seeking similar payment for ninety workers for breach of confidence and misuse of private information as well a breach of Data Protection Act 1988 and defamation and loss of earnings.

Brian Rye, UCATT’s acting general secretary, said: “UCATT has been fighting the blacklisting case since the day it was revealed.

“This initial tranche of compensation is the first significant milestone in the battle to win justice for blacklisted workers.

“I hope that this compensation will provide some recompense for these members who have suffered appalling treatment at the hands of the blacklisters.”
